A silent calling

This forum is intended to be a safe place for non-Catholics AND Catholics to ask questions about Catholicism and Catholic teachings. Here you can read about the faith from faithful, practicing Catholics, ask them your questions, and start to find out exactly what being a Catholic is all about. (Questions and discussions on matters of faith are to be kept respectful and non-inflammatory.)

The monument is located on the south side of Interstate 40 near the community of Groom, Texas. In addition to what you see in these photos there are a gift shop, a display of a replica of the Shroud of Turin, an empty tomb with an angel, a devine mercy fountain, a memorial to the innocent victims of abortion, and a visitor center under construction. Future plans are to complete the visitor center and add a chapel and gardens with other Biblical scenes in life size bronze.

The cross is 190 feet (19 stories) tall. The cross beam is 110 feet long. The total weight is 2,500,000 pounds. The cross-section is 12 feet by 12 feet. The framework is 16" x 16" x 5/8" thick tubular steel. It is anchored to the base with 7" diameter pins weighing 300 pounds each. The foundation is 25 feet by 32 feet and 20 feet deep. It required 65 truckloads of concrete hauled in from Amarillo, Borger, and Pampa to complete the pour in a single day. The foundation contains 80,000 pounds of 1-1/4" 'rebar' iron re-inforcing rods connected with 6,000 welds.
Devotion to the souls in Purgatory contains in itself all the works of mercy, which supernaturalized by a spirit of faith, should merit us Heaven. de Sales
