Why is L.A.’s Cardinal Mahony, of all people, playing such a visible role in Pope Francis’ burial rites?

Re: THAT is MY question!
Then there is this.
Pope Francis and the Freemasons
Among all the tributes to Pope Francis which have poured in from around the world, perhaps the most unexpected I have read came from the Grand Lodge of Italy of the Ancient, Free, Accepted Masons, who joined the “universal mourning” for Francis, whom they credited with “changing the Church” and “embodying the values of brotherhood, humility, and the search for planetary humanism.”
According to the Grand Lodge, “In this moment of mourning, our communion intends to pay homage to the vision of Pope Francis, whose work is characterized by a profound resonance with the principles of Freemasonry.”
You can imagine the kind of field day the Twitter conspiracy theorists and YouTube grifters are going to have with that one.
But Pope Francis has been associated often with Masons, almost from the get-go. And you might not realize, but the pope had thoughts about Freemasonry.

Re: THAT is MY question!
I don't think Francis in the end "changed the church" in the way the freemason leader states.whom they credited with “changing the Church”
Its been "business as usual" for Catholics strong in faith, attending Masses, following age old devotions of the faith, and worshipping according to church traditions.
Where francis banned the latin mass, some churches which were created specifically to deliver the latin mass, francis could not shut them down. For many it just meant relocating to them to attend the latin mass.
The end of the francis papacy ....and the clock was ticking....though many top level cardinals, bishops, archbishops were attacked and humiliated by francis, let us pray that they are restored to their positions, and let us thank God for their loyalty and spirit to speak out against what was contrary to the faith.
In this Jubilee year, of which Scripture calls "the year of the Lord's favour" let us give thanks for God's abundant mercy and commend jorge bergoglio to God's most capable hands.

Cardinal Mahony’s coffin-closing cameo means it is business as usual
To Catholics in the United States, especially, Mahony is not only a face of the sexual abuse scandal but a totem of the ongoing leadership crisis plaguing the Church.

Re: THAT is MY question!
Amen to that!In another week or so, the cardinal electors will gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect the successor to Francis—the successor to Peter—and they will stand before God and each other as they cast their votes, swearing: “I call as my witness Christ the Lord, who is to judge me, that I choose him whom according to God I judge ought to be elected.”
Let an enlightened and clear-eyed understanding of the state of Church leadership culture inform their choice

Re: THAT is MY question!
Problem is that mainstream media is hailing the recent deceased pope as
a reformer for the better....(what they mean by that is that he reformed to
please the secular and other cults)......the 80% elected cardinals will be
brainwashed by that (even though once they are locked in, they cannot have
access to media for purposes of being swayed)
but the francis supporters have got in earlier with media and releasing
statements how much bergoglio did and what a man of peace he was.

Re: THAT is MY question!
That is exactly the response i would expect the world to have to this pope at his funeral. Very telling that it does, actually.
We have to pray and trust in the workings of the Holy Spirit. Remember, God writes straight with crooked lines (so to speak).
